Baby’s First Trip - Tips and Gear for Traveling With Infants

by admin

The first trips you take with your baby can seem to require a lot of gear. But one advantage of driving your own car is that you probably have the luxury of a bit more space than flying on a plane.  The other clear advantages of reaching your destination by car is that you can stop when and where you choose and if your baby is crying or fussy you won’t have to worry about unsettling 200 other people (even though most of them have been in your same shoes).  Essential Gear - As far as what to pack for car traveling, the requirements are the same as those for any trip- a bed, a high chair and the feeding accessories, the diaper bag essentials, the toys/entertainment, and how you will transport them outside of the car.  When packing the car for a destination where you will be responsible for taking care of all the basic needs (as opposed to going to visit friends or family where they have may some or all of the gear you will require) there are plenty of great products available that take up little space and minimize the amount of gear you need to pack in and out of the car.

When thinking about a travel bed check out the Traveller Travel Crib by Phil & Ted’s, in our opinion, it’s one of the best all around Infant-3 Year Old bed available on the market today.  It’s the replacement for the best selling T2 Travel Cot from Phil & Ted’s.

Up until now most parents have used a play yard as the portable infant/toddler bed; we are pleased to tell you that you can throw out that heavy cumbersome item. The Traveller weighs only 6 pounds, sets up easily in minutes, is fully netted, comes with a comfortable mattress and it fits easily into a suitcase!

Traveller Travel Crib from Phil & Ted's

Another great option is the PeaPod Plus pop-up travel bed.  The PeaPod Plus is lightweight and practically sets up itself.   The unique design of this bed features a side opening which makes it easier for parents to put their infants in bed, as well as allow quick access for feedings and diaper changes. It’s a great choice for any family on the go.

PeaPod Plus                               Princess Pink PeaPod Plus

In addition, the Pogy Travel Bassinet is great for infant travel.  With its pop open design, compact fold and generous size the Pogy makes an excellent travel crib. The foam mattress is washable and makes the Pogy cozy and comfortable for your baby.

                                                                              Pogy Travel Bassinet

As far as a high chair, obviously don’t pack that! But definitely look at the Me Too Chair from Phil & Ted’s. It is the most compact booster seat on the market, folding to a height of just 1″ thick!  Another option that isnt quite as light but folds very compactly is the My Chair Folding Booster Seat by Regalo International. It has an accordion type fold and has the added advantage of becoming a portable chair for your child long after they have finished using it as a booster seat (great for camping and watching sporting events).                                                                       Me Too Chair                                 My Chair

If you are on a longer road trip (or even an airplane trip) or if you have a baby who seems prone to the unexpected, then you may want to consider the Messez Car Seat Cover - it comes in a variety of the cutest animal prints and it saves you a lot of time and effort if your child is prone to motion sickness or diaper blow-outs! It slips on and off your car seat in seconds and it is easy to keep clean.

                                                                                      Messeez Car Seat Cover

Car Pillows - You will notice, probably just from going around town, that when your child falls asleep their little head flops all over the place and they look terribly uncomfortable. This is about the time that most parents start to think about investing in a travel pillow, if they don’t have one already. Car pillows are difficult and there is no one perfect pillow for everyone, certainly it becomes a bit easier as your child gets older mostly because there is more choice and they have more coordination and the ability to sit still for two minutes!. While they are young (under 12 months) the choice available right now is fairly standard; the very common horse shoe shaped neck pillows or the pillows that attach to the shoulder straps of your car seats 5- Point Harness. When your child reaches 12 months of age or as soon as your child has moved to a forward facing car seat position the options open up a bit - the Toddler Coddler is a very well thought out system of two long contoured pillows that attach to the headrest posts. It prevents the forward head slump and because it is attached to the headrest it doesn’t interfere with the function or safety of the car sear harness or seatbelt.  The Kid Coddler is a great choice for older children while the Cradler Adjustable Pillow is ideal for infants and small toddlers.

Entertaining - Entertainment for babies can be a bit trickier. Their attention spans can be very short, and you are requiring them to stay put in their car seat for extended periods of time, luckily most babies tend to sleep a fair bit in the car. If you embark on a family journey then you are traveling in style, especially if parents are willing to spell each other off. You will probably find that one parent sitting in the back seat will make your baby very happy and keep the journey as peaceful as possible.  Keep a travel toy box and a cooler loaded up on the backseat with entertainment and snacks for both mom/dad and your baby. Check out the Ultimate Toy and Travel Cooler by Classy Kid or the Happy Traveler Family Gear Bag.

Have the toy box filled with items like bubbles, puppets, a mirror, CD’s, a small photo album for baby full of familiar faces, picture books, and rattles - check out our Games and Travel Toys for Infants and Toddlers article for more great ideas for entertainment. Also check out this article from Mom’s Minivan which gives more ideas on entertainment for baby. Don’t forget to throw a few items in for yourself, just in case you have a moment where there’s nothing else to do but relax.

Ultimate Toy & Travel Bag                                Happy Family Travel Bag

If you find yourself in the situation where you are taking a car trip alone with your baby, whether it is a relatively short drive to spend a weekend somewhere or if it is a longer road trip, you will need to have some distractions for your baby that don’t require your help. Some parents have found another good distraction in portable DVD Players playing DVD’s made specifically for babies (recent research now shows that these types of DVD’s and videos don’t make your baby smarter but they do achieve the valuable goal of distraction and entertainment while traveling.)

Music and singing can also be a wonderful way to entertain your baby while traveling. How often should you stop? - Basically with babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers (and some might say with older children as well), you want to think about planning your stops every 2 - 3 hours. When your baby is young then plan your stops around feeding and diapering and what you may like to do and see.  Bring a stroller, backpack or front carrier that is easy to get in and out of the car then you can go for a scenic walk or just get out of the car and stretch your legs along the way.

Once your child reaches toddler- pre-school age your stops will revolve around finding great parks and playgrounds, and in the summer perhaps a fun lake or stream where they can splash in the water for a while (with your close supervision, of course.). Go online and plan your route with organizations like AAA then you might just want to be a gypsy and see what comes your way or you might want to be super organized and plan your rest stops. Have a Rest Stop Kit at the ready with balls, cars, chalk, bubbles, bathing suits etc.; any things that will encourage your child to run around and get rid of some energy.

Safety Considerations - Do make sure that you are equipped to deal with car troubles and/or inclement weather. Carry a box in the back of the car with a comprehensive first aid kit, blankets or sleeping bag candles, matches, water, formula for your baby and food for you, flares, flashlight and of course do travel with a fully charged cell phone. Additionally, consider having a membership to a national car club that provides emergency roadside services (many new cars now come with an Emergency Roadside package or an OnStar option that you can subscribe to).

Family road trips can be great fun and the source of wonderful lasting family memories. Yes, as with so much of life, there will be frustrating times, but if you can take a deep breath and bring it all back into perspective then hopefully the frustration will only be a passing shadow on an otherwise fun time. Boredom, hunger, needing a diaper change or being tired are so often the source of unrest so make it a point to run down this list first before getting too crazy.

Travel Cribs & Beds for Infants and Toddlers

by admin

Traveling With Infants and Toddler is getting easier. Really!  “One of the most common question we get from parents is ‘Where will I have my baby or toddler sleep safely when we’re traveling?” says Beth McGregor of Traveling With Kids, a website specializing in products and information to simplify traveling with children.

“There are some great choices for parents,” says McGregor. “Gone are the days of dragging around a bulky, 20-pound port-a-crib, now there are several choices that weigh less than 8 pounds and pack easily into a suitcase.”

First is Kidco’s PeaPod Plus Travel Bed for infants and toddlers is a great choice and it comes in two fun color combinations – Red/Navy and Princess Pink.  To set up the PeaPod Plus, simply open the zipper storage case, remove the elastic strap and the bed pops open – literally.  To fold it away, simply hold the sides and twist and fold, and slide it back into its nylon storage case.  Did I mention it weighs 6 pounds and works for infants – 4 year olds!   Open dimensions: 52.5″L x 34″W x 25″H  Folded dimensions: 19″L x 6.5″Hx 19″W

Next is the new Traveller Travel Crib, the latest brainstorm from the guys at Phil & Ted’s.  The Traveller has replaced the very popular T2 Travel Cot and added some great new features.  First, it’s easier to set-up than the T2 and it also has a new “side entry” option in addition to the original top entry T2 and weighs just 6 lbs Open dimensions: 51″ x 25″ x 31″ Folded: 25″ x 9″ x 9″ For ages newborn to 3 years.

The Pogy Travel Bassinet is great for newborns and small infants. It set’s up easily, comes with a comfy mattress for baby and weighs less than 5 lbs!  Open dimensions - 39″L x 18″W x 18″H  Folded dimensions - 17″ x 15″ x 3″

Is the Sit n Stroll Combination Car Seat & Stroller right for you?

by admin

When I was pregnant I saw the Sit ‘n’ Stroll combination car seat/stroller in a catalog and thought “what a great idea!”  I quickly started asking my more experienced “mother” friends what they thought and it was interesting.  Those who had never actually tried the Sit ‘n’ Stroll thought it was too heavy, not a good car seat and an even worse stroller.  Those few who had used one loved it!  As a frequent traveller I was really curious about how it would really work and I was thrilled to find out that it was great!  The Sit ‘n’ Stroll as a car seat was comfortable, easy to use and safe.  It converted easily to stroller and easy to maneuver and push.  I found that the Sit ‘n’ Stroll served as a great 2nd car seat and my friends all want to borrow it when they take trips.  So, take my advice an consider the Sit ‘n’ Stroll when you purchase your next car seat.

Spring Break Safety; Tips for Traveling With Toddlers

by admin

Spring Break is around the corner and many of us are looking forward to a fun time.  We all know that it’s not always easy to travel with children.  And every parent’s worst nightmare is the thought of having a child abducted, especially when you’re traveling.   When you’re planning your next trip that includes crowded airports, amusement parks, malls or similar places here are a few safety tips and product recommendations to consider.

Beth McGregor from www.TravelingWithKids.com recommends having your family wear ‘team colors’.  “If the whole family (parents and children) wear the same color, then it’s easier to spot each other in a crowded place,” says McGregor.  “We also suggest that you talk with your children about the ‘team color’ so that if they lose you, they can tell an authority what you look like and what color shirt you’re wearing.”

Traveling with Kids also recommends that you teach your toddler your cell phone number. “You can make it into a song or thyme and you’d be surprised what they can remember.”   You can also explain to your children that if they’re ever lost, they can tell a grown up the phone number and they’ll help them find Mommy! There are also a few products that are really helpful to give parents peace of mind.

The first is Two in One Harness Buddy backpack and tether.   It comes in a variety of fun animals such as a Monkey, Puppy, Horse, Unicorn, Pig and more and is great for a roaming and adventurous toddler!

A similar product is the O’Pair Child Harness.  The child and parent each wear a waist pack. The child’s is a fun animal, the adults is a simple black waist pack that incorporates a retractable tether that can be attached to the child’s pack.  So you can be connected when you need to be and detached when you want to be!

Who’s Shoes ID Tags are great to add to all of your kids shoes.  The tags have a place for your name and cell phone number as well as any medical information that might be necessary.   Another idea is to use adhesive back mailing labels to put your contact info on and stick it to the back of your childs shirt.  Remember; NEVER put your child’s name on clothing or backpacks that might be visible to a stranger.

These are just a few ideas from www.TravelingWithKids.com to help make your next trip with your toddler easier, safer and more fun!

Should you take your child’s car seat on vacation?

by admin

So, you’re going on a trip with your infant or small child.  You’ve made your hotel and airplane reservations and maybe a car reservation as well.  You’ve packed the clothes, diapers, books for bedtime and a few toys.  Your infant or toddler’s travel bed (PeaPod Plus Travel Bed , T2 Travel Cot, Child Portable Air Bed) is packed for your little one to sleep in!

So now the decision about whether to bring a car seat.  Bring one?  Rent one? Don’t use one?  Lugging a car seat or two can be a real pain. Not to mention that when checking a car seat they get dirty from the airport baggage carts,  the airplane’s luggage compartment and the airport baggage carousel.  Well, here are a few things to think about.

If your set on bring a car seat and you plan to have your child use it on the airplane then consider adding the GoGo Kidz Travelmate car seat trolley to your travel gear list.  This ingenious product attaches to your child’s car seat and turns into a stroller for easy strolling through the airport.

If you’re not planning to use their car seat on the plane but still want to bring it with you, we suggest that you purchase a car seat travel bag.  The Wheelie Car Seat Bag integrates wheels into the bag so you can easily wheel the car seat to/from check-in and baggage claim.  Another choice is the Car Seat Travel Bag which offers protection for almost any type of car seat.

If you’re interested in buying a car seat that is FAA approved, forward and rear facing, and good for children from birth to age 4 and quickly and easily turns into a stroller, then consider the Sit ‘n’ Stroll Combination Car Seat/Stroller.  This is a product that does both things well - a very safe and comfortable car seat and a very functional stroller.

If you decide not to bring a car seat on your trip then consider getting the RideSafer Travel Vest which is a car seat that you can pack into your suitcase! That’s right, the RideSafer is a vest that can tether into a car offering your child a safe and secure car seat when on vacation.  It’s also great for use in taxicabs and buses equipped with seat belts. The RideSafer meets or exceeds all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and is designed for children 35-80 pounds.

So to answer the question….should you take your child’s car seat on vacation?  Well, that’s up to you, as long as your child is in a car seat whenever they’re traveling in a car - at home or on vacation.

p.s.  We also recommend that your child is secure on the airplane. Check out the CARES Airplane Safety Harness which is designed for children 22-44 pounds and up to 40″ tall and can be used on any airplane. It’s fabulous!
